Faults and fixes 6AV2128-3GB06-0AX0
6AV2128-3GB06-0AX0 stays dark, dims by itself or shows a burnt-in image
After switching on the display lights up; if it stays dark for a longer time, the wires on the power connector X80 are probably crossed: the panel has electronic reverse polarity protection and is not damaged, but does not start that way. If the screen dims after a few minutes, that is the screensaver (enabled by default, wait time 1 to 120 minutes, default 5 minutes, brightness 0 to 100 percent, default 30 percent); a brief touch removes it without counting as an operation, and remote access via Smart Client or the configuration PC does so too. You set the brightness in the Control Panel from 10 to 100 percent (via WinCC 0 to 100, values below 10 become 10). An image that stands still for a long time can remain visible as a shadow; that is reversible as long as the screensaver is on. The screen is a capacitive multi-touch screen of 7.0 inch (800 x 480 pixels); according to the manual the LED backlight lasts 50 000 hours until the brightness has halved, and dimming via the screensaver or PROFIenergy extends that.
6AV2128-3GB06-0AX0 does not start, loses time and date or wears out its flash memory
The panel runs on 24 V DC from a supply with safe electrical isolation (SELV/PELV per IEC 61010-2-201), permissible 19.2 to 28.8 V, with 20 ms buffering of mains dips (PS2 per IEC 61131-2) and transients up to 35 V (500 ms) with at least 50 s between them; the rated current is 0.45 A without loads and up to 1.0 A with peripherals (10.8 W). Connect the wires (0.5 to 1.5 mm² with wire end ferrules, stripped 7 to 8 mm, tightening torque 0.5 to 0.6 Nm) to the unplugged connector and never tighten the screws while the connector sits in the panel: that damages the socket. Install the equipotential bonding first (4 mm² to the ground bar, 16 mm² between cabinets, M4 cable lug on the functional ground connection) and never use cable shields as bonding. The real-time clock is buffered for typically 6 weeks; after a longer time without power you set date and time under Language, Region and Formats, Date and time, and note that an operating system update resets the time zone to UTC. Cyclic writing to the internal flash memory (32 GB eMMC, of which 2 GB flash and 1 GB RAM for application data and 12 MB for parameter sets) shortens its life: with Alarm persistency enabled (default off) the alarm buffer writes every two seconds, switch it off with many alarms; log on the SD card in slot X51 (about 0.2 Hz) instead of USB, because data consistency at switch-off is only guaranteed with the SIMATIC SD card of 32 GB or more, and a UPS prevents the loss of the last seconds.
6AV2128-3GB06-0AX0: backup, restore and the system memory card for Automatic backup
Behind the safety catch on the rear are two SD slots: X51 on the left for the data memory card (logs, backups, recipes; SD, SDHC or SDXC in FAT32 or NTFS) and X50 on the right for the system memory card. Only the SIMATIC SD memory card of 32 GB or more (6AV6881-0AP40-0AA0) is permitted as system card; Automatic backup is disabled at delivery and is started under Service and Commissioning, Automatic backup, after the message System memory card plugged. From then on the panel keeps all data including firmware continuously synchronised on the card; if the panel fails, you insert the card into a panel of the same type, which continues the project after copying and a restart. A panel of a different type reports System card error or Backup on system memory card is not device compatible; Reset system memory card failed or Start automatic backup failed points to a defective or wrong card. Remove the system card only from a switched-off panel (during a running project that ends the project) and deactivate Automatic backup before an operating system update, with the card left in the slot. A manual backup (brf master file with the parts .0, .1, .2; up to 20 GB, keep at least 5 GB free) is made under Service and Commissioning, Backup, to the SD card or an industrial USB stick, or from WinCC via Online, HMI device maintenance, Backup (ProSave over X1 or X2). It holds the operating system, Control Panel settings, installed apps, SIMATIC Edge data, project with parameter sets and user management, but no alarm and process value logs; those sit separately on the external medium. A restore first deletes the flash memory including project and panel password, license keys only after an extra prompt, and overwrites all Control Panel settings including IP addresses with those from the backup. Never rename or partially copy the files, do not switch off during backup and restore and do not count on remote access; an interrupted restore makes the panel start in Maintenance Mode and requires a factory reset.
6AV2128-3GB06-0AX0 reports a compatibility conflict, does not get past start-up or starts in Maintenance Mode
Firmware and operating system of the panel must match the WinCC Unified version of the project (V20 or higher; the manual was written for image 21.0.0.0). If they do not match, you load a new image: under System Properties or Service and Commissioning, Update OS, with the fwf master file and the parts .0, .1, .2 from the SIMATIC SD card (32 GB or more) or an industrial USB stick (downloads under Siemens entry 109825605), or from WinCC via Online, HMI device maintenance, Update operating system over X1 or X2. An update deletes project, parameter sets and alarm buffer; the settings are kept, except that the external interfaces are enabled again, the time zone falls back to UTC and the credentials of network drives must be entered again. Deactivate Automatic backup first and leave the system card in the slot, and never switch the panel off during the transfer: otherwise it no longer starts and the procedure must be repeated. If the panel detects a corrupt operating system at start-up, it switches to Maintenance Mode itself and shows that dialog for 10 minutes; otherwise you choose System Properties, Reboot, Reboot in maintenance mode, or start the panel with the Maintenance button (B1, in the opening between X1 and X2, with a blunt non-conductive tool of about 5 mm) held until the boot splash screen appears. Then ProSave from the WinCC installation folder resets the panel to factory settings: tab General with device type, Ethernet and an IP address in the subnet of the PC, tab OS Update with the fwf file, the option Reset to factory settings and the MAC address shown at the top right of the panel screen, then Update OS. That deletes all data and resets the Control Panel to factory settings; without a serviceable image this is the only way, over PROFINET. The bootloader is only updated at the request of your Siemens contact and according to the readme of entry 109973587.
6AV2128-3GB06-0AX0: no connection to the configuration PC, the controller or a USB device
X1 has two PROFINET ports (RJ45, 10/100 Mbit/s) with an integrated switch and one IP address, suitable for an MRP ring; X2 is one gigabit port (10/100/1000 Mbit/s) and the fastest way for the configuration PC, backups and OS updates; both support the PROFINET basic services. A SIMATIC S7 is connected via X1 or X2 with approved, straight cables; controllers from other manufacturers with a serial link via the RS 422/485 port X20 (SUB-D; converter to RS 232 6AV6671-8XE00, elbow adapter 6AV6671-8XD00). Loading only works with Enable transfer on under Service and Commissioning, Transfer (on by default; off protects against unintended overwriting), with the port activated under Network and Internet (Activate this port for use) and, for encrypted transfer, the same transfer password as in the project. After changing the Ethernet parameters of PN-X1, the general network settings, Alarm persistency or the RFID login the panel restarts by itself; after a changed media redundancy in the project you restart it yourself. The four USB ports X61 to X64 (type A, USB 3.1 Gen 1) supply at most 900 mA per port and 1.2 A together, cables no longer than 1.5 m; a USB device with its own power supply must be grounded, a hub such as the Industrial USB Hub 4 (6AV6671-3AH00-0AX0) is allowed; sticks in NTFS (recommended), FAT32 or exFAT, and never pull them while data is being read or written. Interfaces for storage media are deactivated under External Devices and Input, Hardware interfaces; an OS update enables them again. Under System Properties, Panel information you find device type, article and serial number, image, runtime and bootloader version and the MAC addresses of PN-X1 and PN-X2, which Siemens support asks for.
6AV2128-3GB06-0AX0: too hot, mounting position, cutout and clearances
The panel is self-ventilated and approved up to 35 degrees from the vertical; in landscape format vertical 0 to 50 degrees Celsius, inclined 0 to 40; in portrait format 0 to 40 and 0 to 35 respectively (the screen orientation is chosen in the project). Inclined mounting reduces convection; with forced ventilation the value for vertical mounting applies, otherwise certification and warranty are void. Further 10 to 90 percent relative humidity without condensation at the rear, -1000 to 2000 m altitude (1140 to 795 hPa) and pollution up to class G3. Keep 15 mm free left and right of the cutout, 50 mm above and below and 10 mm behind the panel; the sheet material is 2 to 6 mm thick, at most 0.5 mm out of plane and at most Rz 120 rough, otherwise IP65 (Type 4X/12, indoor only) at the front does not apply; the rear is IP20 and belongs in a cabinet. The cutout of the MTP700 Unified Comfort matches that of the TP700 Comfort and the MTP700 Unified Basic. The cutout matches that of SIMATIC Industrial PCs, Industrial Flat Panels and Industrial Thin Clients with the same display diagonal, although the mounting depth may differ; fasten with the steel mounting clips (set 6AV6881-6AD10). With an INOX frame and protective film the front reaches IP69 (entry 109806812).
6AV2128-3GB06-0AX0 does not start the project, or the Control Panel is locked
After switching on, an existing project starts after the wait time under Runtime Properties, Automatic runtime start: 0 starts at once, 15 to 60 seconds shows the dialog Runtime Start with Cancel and Skip, and the default setting no automatic runtime start waits for the Start Runtime button in the Control Panel; without a project the Control Panel appears. From a running project you reach the Control Panel via the taskbar or an operating object with the function ShowControlPanel or StopRuntime. If access is protected (Security, Control panel access), only a user with the function right Control Panel access from the user management of the project can enable or disable that protection; after too many wrong logins (number set in WinCC under Runtime settings, Security) the user is locked out and must be recreated or the user management reloaded. Disable the protection before loading again and check afterwards that this user can log in. A project also loads without a PC: in WinCC (TIA Portal) drag the device folder to an external medium and choose it on the panel under Runtime Properties, Load project from storage; Show details tells whether project and panel are compatible (a different device type or a differing firmware or runtime version gives an error or a warning; then switch the device in the project or update the operating system). At commissioning: system card in X50 SYSTEM and start Automatic backup, load the user management with a Control Panel access user, check the network address, date and time, the wait time and under Apps, App Management the apps you need.
What do I check when replacing a 6AV2128-3GB06-0AX0 (MTP700 Unified Comfort)?
The rating plate on the rear gives the order number: the letter after 6AV2128-3 is the size (G 7, K 10, M 12, Q 15, U 19, X 22 inch) and the versions with B06 and B36 are the standard panels of this manual; the PRO and the hygienic versions have their own manuals. Under System Properties, Panel information you read device type, article number, serial number, image and runtime version, bootloader version and MAC addresses. A replacement of the same type takes over the project via the system card with Automatic backup (copy and restart) or via a restore of the brf backup; a project of a Comfort Panel is converted with the guideline for switching from Comfort Panels to Unified Comfort Panels (entry 109768002) and the Data2Unified add-in (109770510) in WinCC Unified V20 or higher. The cutout of the MTP700 Unified Comfort matches that of the TP700 Comfort and the MTP700 Unified Basic. A protective film for the 7 inch front is ordered as 6AV6881-0GJ22 (with variant key). The panel weighs 1.4 kg without packaging. Repairs go through the Siemens representative (siemens.com/aspa), who tells whether a repair is possible and provides a cost estimate or repair report; a refurbished unit with test report is the fastest way to keep the installation running. The facts above come from SIMATIC HMI Unified Comfort Panels Operating Instructions, TIA V21, 12/2025 (A5E46641217-AG).
Fault not fixed: replace, exchange or repair the 6AV2128-3GB06-0AX0?
Replacing from stock is the fastest route when a machine is down. Van Haelen supplies the 6AV2128-3GB06-0AX0 refurbished (tested, with a test report per serial number) or new in factory packaging, with a 24-month warranty. The current lead time is shown with the condition on this page. Prefer an exchange: you get a refurbished unit straight away and return the faulty one within 14 days. Repairing your own unit is also possible: diagnosis, then a fixed price.
What information should I send for a quick diagnosis?
A photo of the rating plate (order number, product version, firmware), the exact fault code or LED state, when the fault occurs (at power-up, on enable, under load) and what you have already tried. For PLCs an export of the diagnostic buffer, for drives the parameter set. With that we can usually say the same day whether replacing, exchanging or repairing is best.
