Faults and fixes 6AV6643-0CD01
6AV6643-0CD01 (MP 277): screen dark, getting weaker or with burnt-in images
A dark screen on a panel that is switched on is usually the screen saver or the reduced backlight: a key or a touch cancels it without executing that key's function. You set the times in the Control Panel in the ScreenSaver dialog: minutes until the backlight is reduced (0 = off) and minutes until the screen saver starts (minimum 5, maximum 71582, 0 = off), with the choice Standard or Blank Screen. Siemens writes that the brightness of the backlight decreases incrementally during its operational life and recommends the backlight reduction to extend that life; the brightness itself is set in OP Properties, tab Display, with UP and DOWN. A burn-in effect from the same content shown for a long time disappears by itself once the screen saver runs, and takes longer the longer the image stood. 6AV6643-0CD01 (MP 277 Touch): touch lands offset or does not respond
The mounting position and viewing angle cause parallax; then recalibrate in the Control Panel: OP Properties, tab Touch, button Recalibrate. Touch the middle of the calibration crosshairs; it then appears at four more positions, and if you do not touch the middle the procedure is repeated. Then you must touch the screen within 30 seconds, otherwise the new calibration is discarded and the old one remains in effect. After a restore and after an operating system update a new calibration may be needed. The screen is a resistive analog touch screen; clean it only with the panel switched off, with a cloth and a little soapy water or screen cleaning foam, never with compressed air, steam, solvents or scouring powder, and wipe from the edge inwards. 6AV6643-0CD01 starts in the Loader, the project is gone or the transfer reports a compatibility conflict
Without a project the panel stays in the Loader; start Transfer mode there (or in the project with an operating element) and transfer the project from the configuring PC, or restore a backup: with ProSave from a PC (file *.psb, with project and device image, password list and recipe data; license keys are not included) or with Backup/Restore in the Control Panel from an MMC or SD card or a USB stick. A restore first deletes everything on the panel and then asks you to remove the card and restart. If the transfer reports a compatibility conflict, the version of the configuration software and the device image differ: update the operating system (OS Update with a *.img from the WinCC flexible Images folder) or restore a matching image; that update deletes all data, project and licenses included. If the panel has no operating system or a corrupt one, for example after a power failure during a restore, use the update with Reset to factory settings: panel off, start the update in ProSave, switch the power on when ProSave prompts, then configure the data channels again. 6AV6643-0CD01: no connection to the PLC over MPI, PROFIBUS DP or PROFINET
The serial port X10/IF 1B (RS 422/RS 485, maximum 12 Mbps) is set in the factory with the DIP switch on the back to S7 communication over RS 485 without RTS on the plug; the two other RS 485 settings put RTS on pin 4 (like the PLC) or pin 9 (like a programming device) and are for commissioning, the fourth setting activates RS 422. The panel needs a unique address on the bus and the same bus parameters as every other station; with more masters, clear the check box Panel is the only master on the bus (S7-Transfer Settings). Note: when a project is started or transferred, manually changed MPI/PROFIBUS settings are overwritten by those in the project. For PROFINET: point-to-point with a cross-cable, with PROFINET IO direct keys always through a switch, and the device name must equal the one in HW Config of STEP 7; PROFINET IO direct keys and the serial port are mutually exclusive. If nothing connects over PROFINET, a data channel is often disabled: at least one channel must be active to transfer. 6AV6643-0CD01: power supply, clock, memory card and USB
The panel runs on 24 V DC, permissible 20.4 to 28.8 V, with transients up to 35 V (500 ms) and at least 50 s between them; typical consumption approx. 600 mA (8" Touch), 700 mA (10" Touch and 8" Key) and 800 mA (10" Key), maximum 1000 to 1200 mA, power-on surge approx. 1 A2s. The fuse is electronic and internal, nothing to replace; the panel has reverse polarity protection and needs a power supply with safe electrical isolation (PELV). Keep the connection sequence: equipotential bonding, power supply (with a polarity test), PLC, configuring PC, peripherals; the 2-pin terminal takes wires up to 1.5 mm² and must not be tightened while plugged into the panel. There is no battery: the real-time clock is buffered for approx. 6 weeks, so after a long time off the time must be set again. A UPS (SITOP DC UPS from 6 A, for example 6EP1931-2DC42) is monitored over USB with the ProSave option UPS. The card slot takes MMC and SD cards for backup, logs, recipes and the operating system; the multimedia card of the S7 PLC does not fit, a new card is first formatted on the panel, a correctly inserted card stands approx. 3 mm proud, and never pull it while data is being written. The two USB ports are USB 1.1 host with a maximum of 500 mA, the Ethernet port RJ45 10/100 Mbps, the application memory 6 MB. What do I check when replacing a 6AV6643-0CD01 (MP 277)?
Read the order number from the rating plate on the back: 6AV6643-0CB01 is the 8" Touch, 6AV6643-0CD01 the 10" Touch, 6AV6643-0DB01 the 8" Key and 6AV6643-0DD01 the 10" Key; the customer-specific versions we stock are the same 10" Touch with their own front. Siemens has two device versions per type, recognizable by the order number (the manual names -1AX1, -1AX2 and -1AX5), and their images are not interchangeable: take the same version or update the operating system. First back up the old panel (ProSave or the memory card), restore it on the replacement, calibrate the touch screen and set the clock. Mount with the spring or aluminium clips and the seal; for cabinets thinner than 2 mm there is a clamping frame (6AV6671-3CS00-0AX0 for the 8" Touch, 6AV6671-3CS01-0AX0 for the 8" Key, 6AV6671-8XS00-0AX0 for the 10" Touch) and the service pack 6AV6671-3XA01-0AX1 holds seals, clips and the 2-pin power terminal. Siemens announced the phase-out of the TP/OP 277, MP 177, MP 277 and MP 377 on 27 September 2013 (entry 62977695, since replaced by 109486162). The successors per the migration guide are TP900 Comfort (6AV2124-0JC01-0AX0) for the 8" Touch, KP900 Comfort (6AV2124-1JC01-0AX0) for the 8" Key, TP1200 Comfort (6AV2124-0MC01-0AX0) for the 10" Touch and KP1200 Comfort (6AV2124-1MC01-0AX0) for the 10" Key; they are widescreen, the cut-out of the 10" Touch (310 x 248 mm) differs from the TP1200 (310 x 221 mm), the 8" Touch (226 x 166 mm) from the TP900 (250 x 166 mm) and the 10" Key (434 x 291 mm) from the KP1200 (434 x 268 mm), and the project must be migrated. A refurbished MP 277, by contrast, fits one to one. Fault not fixed: replace, exchange or repair the 6AV6643-0CD01?
Replacing from stock is the fastest route when a machine is down. Van Haelen supplies the 6AV6643-0CD01 refurbished (tested, with a test report per serial number) or new in factory packaging, with a 24-month warranty. The current lead time is shown with the condition on this page. Prefer an exchange: you get a refurbished unit straight away and return the faulty one within 14 days. Repairing your own unit is also possible: diagnosis, then a fixed price.
What information should I send for a quick diagnosis?
A photo of the rating plate (order number, product version, firmware), the exact fault code or LED state, when the fault occurs (at power-up, on enable, under load) and what you have already tried. For PLCs an export of the diagnostic buffer, for drives the parameter set. With that we can usually say the same day whether replacing, exchanging or repairing is best.
