Faults and fixes 6AV7801-0BB10-1AC0
6AV7801-0BB10-1AC0 (Panel PC 677): the TEMP LED is lit orange, what now?
Two LEDs sit at the top left of the front: POWER (green) means voltage is present, TEMP (orange) that a temperature threshold has been exceeded. Three sensors measure the processor, the area beneath the power supply and the intake air next to the DVI port. When a threshold is exceeded, the device and CPU fans run at full speed and the SOM or DiagMonitor software reports the fault. Siemens lists these checks: are the fan openings free, is the fan still turning (speed shown in SOM or DiagMonitor), is the ambient temperature within +5 to +45 °C, is the power supply load within its limit, and are the heat sinks free of dust? The alarm stays until the temperature is back below the threshold and you acknowledge it in SOM with the broom icon; without SOM or DiagMonitor, restart the PC. 6AV7801-0BB10-1AC0 (Panel PC 677) beeps at start-up: what does the code mean?
At power-up the BIOS tests the hardware (POST). If it finds an error, a beep code of 2 x 2 sequences of 1 to 4 beeps sounds. Each pair of sequences is one hexadecimal digit: 1-1 is 0, 1-2 is 1 and so on up to 4-4 is F. Example from the manual: 1-3 and 3-1 gives 28H, determining the memory size. For 28H, 2AH, 2CH, 2EH, 30H, 38H, 5CH, 60H, 62H and BCH Siemens says: replace the memory modules. 3AH is the processor cache (replace the processor), 90H the hard disk (disconnect it and replace it if necessary) and 55H the USB hardware (remove USB devices). For 3CH test by disabling hardware components in Setup, for 49H and 98H also by removing expansion cards. In addition: two short beeps are a BIOS checksum error, which can occur after a battery change or with a flat battery; one long and five short an Ethernet error; one long and eight short an error reading the MPI system information. 6AV7801-0BB10-1AC0 (Panel PC 677): wrong date and time or 'System battery is dead'
First set date and time in the BIOS Setup (F2 during start-up). If they are still wrong afterwards, or the BIOS reports 'System battery is dead - Replace and run SETUP', the backup battery is flat or defective. Siemens calls this battery a wearing part: replace it every five years, only with the same type or the type Siemens recommends (A5E00331143). Note the BIOS settings first: with BIOS profile 'Standard' the configuration data is lost when the battery is changed, with 'User' it is kept and you only set date and time again. The battery can be changed with the power on, but Siemens recommends switching the device off first. 6AV7801-0BB10-1AC0 (Panel PC 677) does not boot: 'Operating system not found' or 'Failure Fixed Disk'
For 'Operating system not found' Siemens lists these causes: no operating system present, the wrong drive addressed (a disk in drive A or B), an incorrect active boot partition, a wrong boot drive setting in SETUP, or a hard disk that is not connected or defective. 'Failure Fixed Disk' is an error accessing the hard disk: check SETUP. 'Previous boot incomplete - Default configuration used' follows an aborted start-up, for example after a power failure: set the SETUP settings again. If the software has to be reinstalled, use only the Restore DVD of this device: the order number on the DVD must match the one on the rating plate, because chipsets and drivers differ between devices. Restoring also erases licences and authorizations; back them up first with the Automation License Manager. What do I check when replacing a 6AV7801-0BB10-1AC0 (Panel PC 677)?
Check the rating plate for the power supply: 24 V DC (20.4 to 28.8 V, SELV) or 100 to 240 V AC (autorange); the replacement must have the same. With the same order number, chipset and drivers match your image: carry over the hard disk or the image and back up licence keys first. With clamps and the encircling seal the front is IP65, with screws IP54; the 12-inch touch variant cannot be fixed with screws. After transport in cold weather, wait about 12 hours before switching on. Siemens ended production of the Panel PC 677 in May 2010 (product note 42262120). Has the manufacturer discontinued the 6AV7801-0BB10-1AC0, and what is the successor?
Siemens has carried the SIMATIC Panel PC 670 as a phase-out product since 1 October 2005, then orderable as a new device for approximately one more year (product note 21795642, 1 August 2005); the Panel PC 677 remained orderable until the end of 2009 and was repaired by Siemens at least until 1 October 2013 (38022835, 8 September 2009). The current E generation is running out too: the IPC627E and IPC677E are phase-out products since 1 October 2026 (PM400, 110007332), and for the IPC647E and IPC847E the phase-out starts on 1 October 2026 with the switch to the IPC Rx-528A or Rx-548A (110007134, 5 October 2026). If the installation keeps running, Van Haelen supplies the 6AV7801-0BB10-1AC0 refurbished and tested, with a 24-month warranty, and exchanges or repairs your own unit; a fault then does not force a conversion.
Fault not fixed: replace, exchange or repair the 6AV7801-0BB10-1AC0?
Replacing from stock is the fastest route when a machine is down. Van Haelen supplies the 6AV7801-0BB10-1AC0 refurbished: tested to this family's test protocol, with a test report per serial number, with a 24-month warranty. The current lead time is shown with the condition on this page. Prefer an exchange: you get a refurbished unit straight away and return the faulty one within 14 days. Repairing your own unit is also possible: diagnosis, then a fixed price.
What information should I send for a quick diagnosis?
A photo of the rating plate (order number, product version, firmware), the exact fault code or LED state, when the fault occurs (at power-up, on enable, under load) and what you have already tried. For PLCs an export of the diagnostic buffer, for drives the parameter set. With that we can usually say the same day whether replacing, exchanging or repairing is best.
