Faults and fixes 6AV7873-0BE31-1AC0
6AV7873-0BE31-1AC0 (Panel PC 677B): the TEMP LED is lit orange, what now?
Two LEDs sit at the top left of the front: POWER (green) means voltage is present, TEMP (orange) that a temperature threshold has been exceeded. Three sensors measure the processor, the area beneath the power supply and the intake air next to the DVI port. When a threshold is exceeded, the device and CPU fans run at full speed and the SOM or DiagMonitor software reports the fault. Siemens lists these checks: are the fan openings free, is the fan still turning (speed shown in SOM or DiagMonitor), is the ambient temperature within +5 to +45 °C (+5 to +40 °C with the DVD burner in operation), is the power supply load within its limit, and are the heat sinks free of dust? The alarm stays until the temperature is back below the threshold and you acknowledge it in SOM with the broom icon; without SOM or DiagMonitor, restart the PC. 6AV7873-0BE31-1AC0 (Panel PC 677B) beeps at start-up: what does the code mean?
At power-up the BIOS tests the hardware (POST). If it finds an error, a beep code of 2 x 2 sequences of 1 to 4 beeps sounds. Each pair of sequences is one hexadecimal digit: 1-1 is 0, 1-2 is 1 and so on up to 4-4 is F. Example from the manual: 1-3 and 3-1 gives 28H, determining the memory size. For 28H, 2AH, 2CH, 2EH, 30H, 38H, 5CH, 60H, 62H and BCH Siemens says: replace the memory modules. 3AH is the processor cache (replace the processor), 90H the hard disk (disconnect it and replace it if necessary) and 55H the USB hardware (remove USB devices). For 3CH test by disabling hardware components in Setup, for 49H and 98H also by removing expansion cards. In addition: two short beeps are a BIOS checksum error, which can occur after a battery change or with a flat battery; one long and five short an Ethernet error; one long and eight short an error reading the MPI system information. 6AV7873-0BE31-1AC0 (Panel PC 677B): wrong date and time or 'System battery is dead'
First set date and time in the BIOS Setup (F2 during start-up). If they are still wrong afterwards, or the BIOS reports 'System battery is dead - Replace and run SETUP', replace the backup battery, only with the same type or the type Siemens recommends (A5E00331143); Siemens advises doing so every five years. Note the BIOS settings first and change it quickly: with BIOS profile 'Standard' the configuration data is lost if the change takes more than 30 seconds, with 'User' it is kept. The content of the SRAM is also lost after 30 seconds. Source: Siemens, SIMATIC Panel PC 677B Operating Instructions (A5E02217408-01), 12.7.8, 13.1 and 14.1.
6AV7873-0BE31-1AC0 (Panel PC 677B): Windows no longer boots
According to Siemens, first check the 'SATA/PATA Configuration' submenu and the Boot menu in the BIOS Setup. For 'Operating system not found' the causes are: no operating system, the wrong drive addressed, an incorrect active boot partition, a wrong boot drive setting in SETUP, or a hard disk that is not connected or defective; 'Failure Fixed Disk' is an error accessing the disk. You can restore with the Restore DVD that belongs to the device. That erases all data, user settings, authorizations and licence keys on the restored drive, so back them up first. What do I check when replacing a 6AV7873-0BE31-1AC0 (Panel PC 677B)?
Check the rating plate for the power supply: 100 to 240 V AC (autorange) or 24 V DC (SELV); the replacement must have the same. The DC variant draws up to 9 A continuously and up to 14 A for 30 ms at switch-on; if the PC hangs during start-up, Siemens names an external 24 V supply that is too weak as a possible cause. With clamps the front is IP65, with screws and a backing plate (17 and 19 inch) IP54; this does not apply to the 12-inch touch variant. After transport in cold weather, wait about 12 hours before switching on. Carry over the hard disk or the image and back up licence keys first. Fault not fixed: replace, exchange or repair the 6AV7873-0BE31-1AC0?
Replacing from stock is the fastest route when a machine is down. Van Haelen supplies the 6AV7873-0BE31-1AC0 refurbished: tested to this family's test protocol, with a test report per serial number, with a 24-month warranty. The current lead time is shown with the condition on this page. Prefer an exchange: you get a refurbished unit straight away and return the faulty one within 14 days. Repairing your own unit is also possible: diagnosis, then a fixed price.
What information should I send for a quick diagnosis?
A photo of the rating plate (order number, product version, firmware), the exact fault code or LED state, when the fault occurs (at power-up, on enable, under load) and what you have already tried. For PLCs an export of the diagnostic buffer, for drives the parameter set. With that we can usually say the same day whether replacing, exchanging or repairing is best.
